How police finally caught killer Malcolm Naden in NSW bushland

Malcolm Naden was on the run for 7 years as Australia’s most wanted fugitive. The briefs of evidence against Naden were red hot, but his trail had gone cold.

Naden faced charges for the murder of two young women, the indecent assault of a 12-year-old and shooting with attempting to kill a police officer.

Former detective Ricky Hennesy recounts capturing and interrogating Malcolm Naden on this episode of Crime Insiders:

Naden evaded police by escaping to NSW bushland and stealing supplies from various homes and sheds. Former detective Ricky Hennessy was tasked with capturing Naden.

“It wasn’t a sense of trying to prove or find further evidence in relation to the acts themselves. It was more about actually finding Malcolm,” said Hennessy.

“I got the sense that Malcolm deliberately took on that way of life to distract himself to stop himself from being tempted to reoffend,” he said.

The police taskforce planned to catch Naden when he returned to one of the properties where he would steal supplies.

“When the tactical police finally did apprehend him, he immediately identified himself as Malcolm Nathan. And his famously remembered for saying to the tactical police, thank God, it’s over.”
