In July 1992 at 1.40pm George Hateley and his special operations unit “The Sons of God” sat patiently 150m away from the freight office at Melbourne airport, their eyes focused on a white panel van.
Police had solid intelligence that an armed robbery was to be carried out and were equipped with shotguns, handguns and automatics.
The intelligence proved correct when 2 men wearing Michael Jackson masks entered the office, taking more than a million dollars in cash.
Their success was short lived as the Sons of God intercepted the pair before they had a chance to make a getaway.
