Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that’s killed a woman and child overnight at Heckenberg, in Sydney’s south-west.

At around 12:35am last night, numerous triple zero calls notified emergency responders about the blaze on St John’s Road.

Fire and Rescue Assistant Commissioner Michael Morris has told Sky News crews were quick to the scene.

“The first fire truck was on scene within approximately 5 minutes of the initial 000 call, so a very rapid response. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, it wasn’t going to make any difference to this outcome,” Morris said.

Four trucks and 16 firefighters followed found the house fire continuing to spread throughout the single-level fibro home.

Eight people managed to flee the home before emergency services arrived, with one man and two children suffering serious injuries. The man and one of the children remain in hospital.

Firefighters were unable to enter the property due to the extreme fire conditions. Once the fire was put out they tragically located the bodies of a 46-year-old woman and six-year-old child.

Fire investigators and NSW Police are working through the ruins to try to determine how and why the fire started.
