Canberra commuters were left stranded this morning after local bus drivers launched a snap strike in response to the increasing number of workplace assaults.
According to the Transport Workers’ Union (TWU), at least 40 assaults on bus drivers are reported each month, with incidents ranging from physical attacks to verbal threats.
TWU ACT Sub-Branch Secretary Klaus Pinkas said drivers face daily abuse, including bizarre incidents like the pouring of fish heads on a driver.

“Drivers are getting assaulted on a daily basis,” Mr. Pinkas said.
“This strike is a cry for help, and there has been no adequate response from Transport Canberra.”
The strike, which could last all day, has disrupted bus services across the city.
While light rail and special needs buses continue to operate, Transport Canberra advised commuters to find alternative travel options.
Operations Manager Ian McGlinn apologized for the inconvenience and stated that the ACT government would seek intervention from the Fair Work Commission to resolve the situation.
ACT Transport Minister Chris Steel also expressed concern over the impact on Canberrans who rely on buses for daily travel.
He confirmed that efforts are underway to improve driver safety, including the introduction of transport officers with the authority to address anti-social behavior.
“I’ve asked Transport Canberra to pursue all options available, including through the Fair Work Commission, to restore bus services and ensure that they remain reliable,” Mr. Steel said.
