Labor’s Steven Miles and the Liberals’ David Crisafulli had their final debate on Tuesday night ahead of Queensland’s general election on October 26.
Archie Milligan from the Queensland LiSTNR Newsroom discussed the factors at play in the state election with The Briefing host Bension Siebert.
“Both parties really are focused on these core issues of youth crime, housing, cost of living and sort of energy and transport,” said Milligan.
However, youth crime and cost of living were the main focus of the two parties, with youth crime specifically being the “cornerstone” of the Liberals’s campaign, said Milligan.
“Adult crime, adult time has not managed to find much support within people that work in the youth justice sector, but it sounds good on the street to the average Queenslander.”
The other major issue that had recently taken the spotlight was access to abortion, which Milligan said had “rocked this whole election.”
This culminated in a confrontation between Miles and Crisafulli at last night’s debate, where Miles questioned his opponent’s support for reproductive rights.
Milligan said both parties have also attempted to capture a “disengaged” youth audience using TikTok, especially Labor.
“They’ve really tried to utilise that platform, especially Labor. I mean, it’s where I first saw a lot of these campaigns around conversion therapy, termination of pregnancy, housing.”
