Carrie Reveals Her Twenty Year Battle With Anxiety

Carrie Bickmore opened up on her national drive show about her twenty year battle with anxiety, that has been a constant struggle that has followed her throughout her career.

The revelation started with Carrie bringing her co-host Tommy Little, audio from the early days in the radio presenter’s career, even acknowledging that she thought it might be a ‘peculiar thing to do’. The importance behind shining a spotlight and breaking the illusion, further fuelled the need to raise this important topic:

“For a long time I felt… shame, I think embarrassment. I don’t think I really understood what was fully going on in my own head”

The Rove Live news reporter reflects on footage from her time on the popular channel 10 show, describing what it’s like watching back her younger self, knowing the anxiety she was riddled with.

“It made me really emotional… and I just wanted to reach through the phone and hug her”

The conversation extended to anxiety that existed even outside of her workplace environment, which followed her into her pregnancy with her daughter, Evie:

“I was so scared after almost dying with my son Ollie, that my anxiety was through the roof”

Tommy Little lended his support, informing his co-host that she’s one of the best broadcasters in the country, and reminded her that she was able to achieve the success she has, all whilst struggling with anxiety:

“If anxiety is coming for you and thinks it’s going to hold you back, good luck anxiety, because you’re just literally a ball of fire, that will do whatever you put your mind to.”

Anxiety is applicable to people in many fields, and whilst it can be crippling, the National Drive Show hosts remind us that it doesn’t need to stop you – despite the difficulty it takes.
