When actress and renowned radio host, Christie Hayes, heard her mother say that she was noticing signs of a developmental delay in Christies first-born son, Hendrix, she couldn’t believe her ears. Despite this disbelief, Christie placed Hendrix on a waitlist that ultimately led to a profound revelation: he was diagnosed with level 2 autism.
After the diagnosis, Hayes admits that the word ‘autism’ itself frightened her. Like many parents faced with a similar situation, she was unfamiliar with the disorder and the challenges it might bring, she told Dr Golly.
‘I thought, what does this mean? Does this mean that he’ll never speak? Does this mean that he won’t have functionality? I felt like all hope was lost.’
However, as Hayes delved deeper into understanding autism and actively engaged with her son’s unique world, she discovered a profound change within herself. She realized that autism is not something to fear but rather something to embrace and celebrate. Her journey alongside Hendrix allowed her to witness the immense strength, resilience, and beauty that comes with neurodiversity.
‘Because at the end of the day, I want to raise young boys who grow up to be men that that love themself right back for who they are.’
