Joe Daniher’s last goal in footy sent him out on the highest possible high, putting Brisbane 60 points up late in the fourth quarter of the grand final against Sydney.
The goal, at the 26 minute mark of the fourth term, sparked rapturous celebrations, with teammates coming from everywhere to mob the enigmatic forward/ruck.
Joe Daniher’s last goal ended up being the very last kick of a footy in his career.
Daniher bows out with 204 games and 395 goals on his CV, as well as last Saturday’s flag win.
108 of those appearances and 191 of those goals came during his eight season stint at Essendon, where he started in 2013 after being picked up as a father/son selection at pick 10 in the 2012 draft.
As a Bomber he won a best and fairest and was named All-Australian in 2017, and won Mark of the Year and the Anzac Medal in the same year.
Daniher put together a typically enigmatic display on grand final day, kicking 2.4 on the day to go with 16 disposals, 8 marks, 5 inside 50s and 4 clearances.
His 16 touches led to 12 score involvements, including 2 direct goal assists.
Since moving to Brisbane, the reclusive Daniher has been living across the border in northern NSW and commuting to play for the Lions.
Daniher’s retirement also means a famous AFL streak continues, with no premiership match day team ever playing together again.
