Triple M’s Dale Thomas has paid tribute to retiring legend Dustin Martin with insight into how to curtail his vintage ‘don’t argue’.
“We had a jiu jitsu coach [at Carlton] teaching us how to break a fend off,” Thomas said on Triple M Breakfast with Rosie, Wil and Daisy.
“The tackling approach was to come in, swipe an arm and then wrap him up. It wasn’t as easy as that!”
Thomas realised throughout the latter stages of his career, it was near-impossible to stop Martin’s signature move.
“Don’t apply yourself with huge force, you’ll just get pushed off. When you come flying in all rigid and tough and try grab hold of him – his force matches that and you go flying backwards.”
