Hawthorn legend and Triple M Footy commentator Jason Dunstall says he doesn’t think the Dogs’ four tall forward line will work in 2023.
After years of Aaron Naughton fighting a solitary battle up forward, the Dogs now have four legitimate options for their key forward spots.
Through recent drafts they’ve brought in the supremely talented pairing of Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Sam Darcy, while through the trade period over the off-season Rory Lobb made his way to the club.
With Tim English in the ruck, it will be a super-sized look for the Dogs.
“I can’t remember the last time I saw a team win a game on contested marks.
“They’re not four superstars… let’s not get too carried away about what your expectations of them are.”
“What happens when you don’t mark it? What happens when the ball hits the deck?”
After playing periods of the pre-season in defence, Darcy will assume a role as a forward in Round 1 but he may become a swingman for his side.
The son of Bulldogs legend Luke Darcy, Sam has already shown his ability at both ends of the ground.
While Dunstall shared his doubts over the four tall effectiveness, he also praised Luke Beveridge for pushing the envelope of the modern game.
“But I love the fact that we’re experimenting and we’re trying different things.
“It’ll be a really fascinating test case I think.”
