It’s a Grand Final story which will rival any code, anywhere in the world!
In an entertaining chat with Mark Howard on the Howie Games podcast, league legend Mark Geyer takes listeners into the heart-pounding details of the Penrith Panthers’ historic 1991 Premiership win!
From a half time plea from club legend Royce Simmons which brought his team mates to tears, to a controversial send-off and then on-field redemption for the ages.
MG was sent packing for dissent in the second half after hurling accusations at the touch judge, calling him “a fu#$ing cheat.”
What followed was a tense 10 minutes in the sin bin, but Geyer’s comeback would be nothing short of legendary.
“It felt like an hour in there, but I came out determined to help us win.”
And that he did.
In a moment straight out of a Hollywood movie, Geyer was thrust into a last-minute play known as the ‘North Sydney’ move. It wasn’t supposed to involve him—but fate had other plans. “I flicked the ball to Brad Fittler, and it was the best pass of my life!” Geyer says.
And then came the fairy-tale ending. With just minutes left, MG attacked a Panthers line-out to set up Royce Simmons, the retiring hero, who scored a try in the corner that sealed the Premiership!
“I screamed so loud, I fractured my larynx,” Geyer recounts. The Panthers had done it. A year after being defeated on the same stage, they had turned the tables in spectacular fashion.
This is a story of grit, redemption, and the kind of euphoria that made Penrith “party like it was New Year’s Eve every day for about three weeks!”
Don’t miss Geyer’s full recount of the Panthers’ greatest day—it’s rugby league history at its finest.
