The first Ashes Test at Edgbaston has come down a thrilling final day with Australia requiring 174 runs while England are after seven wickets.
History is against Australia but former Test gloveman Brad Haddin has detailed the “big key” for the Aussies and what it takes to win when chasing a large target.
Australia has not chased down a target of more than the 281 they require in this Test since the second Test in Johannesburg against South Africa in 2011.
That Test is mostly remembered as Pat Cummins’ debut, but Haddin scored a crucial 55 in the run chase as the Aussies squared the series after being bowled out for 47 in the first Test loss in Cape Town.
Australia’s only successful run chase at Edgbaston came in 1993 when Mark Waugh scored 62no (to go with his 137 in the first innings) to help reach the target of 120 with eight wickets in hand.
In 2005, Ricky Ponting’s side came mightily close to adding another victorious Edgbaston chase to their tally but fell agonisingly short by two runs in one of the greatest Test matches of all time.
