Manly Sea Eagles great Steve ‘Beaver’ Menzies joined The Rush Hour with Gus, Jude & Wendell for their Grand Final Legends special podcast.
LISTEN HERE:
Beaver played a mammoth 477 career games across the NRL and Super League, yet in his swan song for his Northern Beaches side, Menzies popped off the bench to score a farewell try in Manly’s record-breaking 40-0 Grand Final win over Melbourne Storm.
“I came off the bench,” explained Menzies.
“Steve Matai came off injured and they said, you’re on.
“The ball came out to me and I flicked it to Michael Robertson.”
Menzies is not just one of the club’s favourite sons, but is cherished by all fans for his humour, wit but also commitment in succeeding as a team.
That attitude was transparent throughout his entire dual-premiership winning career.
“1000 things go through your mind,” continued Beaver.
“[Robertson] you’ve scored three tries, I wonder if anyone’s ever scored four tries in a Grand Final?
“If I was him I’d try to score.
“Oh shit he’s passed it!”
It was the cherry on top for a side who had fallen at the same hurdle the year prior to the same opponents.
The 40-0 scoreline was exclamation mark to one of the modern era’s greatest rivalries.
Menzies, holds it as his favourite try ever.
“All I thought was don’t drop it!
“It’s the greatest try I’ve ever scored.
“I think it’s like 28cm.”
