Gus Gould On Realities Of Making Tough Calls On Players

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs General Manager Phil Gould opened up on Footy Talk League’s Journos about the brutal realities of dealing with players when they’re not needed anymore.

“The right calls are usually the hard calls, but they’re the right calls,” stated Gould.

“That’s what leadership is.

“You’ve got to make those decisions.”

Recently the club had to let Josh Addo-Carr go after off-field indiscretions but stated that, “I love Josh, and I love what he’s done for a club, and he’s been great for our club.

“But what happened in this instance, as a club, we just couldn’t walk past it and accept it.

“Every now and then you’ve just got to put a stake in the ground and say, well, this is
what we stand for.”

Gould continues talking about that the hardest part is actually telling “kids” who have been in the club’s system that their time is up.

“The hardest conversation is saying to the 22, 23 year old kid that’s been in your system
for five or six years and busted his gut.

“Put his career on hold, he’s put his school on hold, he’s put his education on hold, he’s put his family on hold, he’s put relationships on hold.

““Mate, you’re not going to make it.

“You need to find a job.”
