Ex-South African paceman Morne Morkel joined Willow Talk today and explained why the Proteas haven’t used a sports psychologist to confront the demons of their repeated failures at World Cups.
LISTEN HERE:
“The main thing that South Africa sometimes guard against is bringing people in, psychologists in, because that again is the monkey on the shoulder, the choke attacks,” Morkel said.
“So they don’t want to put that front up that we’re thinking about the choke or thinking we can’t play the big moments.
“They want to go ‘we’re here, we’re gonna dominate, we’ve got the team to do it and, y’know, screw the rest’.
“So they safeguard a bit of a poker face with that.”
