Ryan Daniels Reveals A Big Change Coming For The AFL Draft As Soon As Next Year

Triple M Footy news breaker Ryan Daniels has revealed a big change coming for the AFL draft, that could take effect as early as next year.

RYAN DANIELS ON A BIG CHANGE FOR THE AFL DRAFT:

The change will be about clubs being how clubs in northern states are able to access their academy prospects compared to the other sides.

“Every team has an academy, but the northern states, so New South Wales and Queensland, they get full access to theirs,” Rhino said this morning on Xav & Michelle for Breakfast.

“They can pick their academy players at pick 1, 10, 20, 30, whatever, they can match bids… if you’re West Coast, Freo, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, any of the other clubs that aren’t those clubs, you can’t access those players until after 40.”

“So if someone bids on them, if someone drafts them at pick 30, too bad, they’re going there.”

Daniels said that system with unfettered access for northern clubs will be changing soon.

“The system is going to change… I’m here today to say that it’s going to,” he said.

“I believe that they’re gonna switch it back to 20.

“The first 20 will be protected… in this week’s scenario, Lance Collard went to St Kilda at 28.

“That wouldn’t happen, West Coast would get him.

“I think that will happen as soon as next year.”

Daniels suggested club frustrations were part of the reason for the change.

“Clubs were ticked off this week,” he said.

“They were filthy.”
