Collingwood cult hero Brayden Maynard is famous for sticking up for his teammates, and this week he spoke jumping in to protect Nick Daicos in a famously rough game against Sydney.
(from 25:07)
“Any one of my team mates I’m gonna protect, no matter the situation,” Maynard said on the Jock and Journo podcast with Collingwood teammate Scott Pendlebury and Jay Clark.
“Every bloody week it’s with Nick… whoever targets him, gets targeted by us.”
Maynard expanded on the Sydney game in round 8 this year, where tagger Ryan Clarke had the younger Daicos in his sights.
“That was just one of the games where he probably got targeted a little bit more,” Maynard said.
“Clarke had kicked the first goal, and there was about 10 blokes just getting into Nick, and them Tom Papley just went up behind him and just smashed him with an elbow, and then it was pretty much on.”
MORE FROM JOCK AND JOURNO:
Maynard explained that those were moments he relishes on the field.
“I love protecting my teammates, and I love being by their side,” he said.
“I feel like everyone’s sorta got that connection and willingness to help each other and protect each other… it’s great to be a part of.”
MORE ON NICK DAICOS:
Maynard even claimed that Daicos’s parents are even grateful for his help with young Nick!
Dimma also gave an insight into some other elements that nearly entered negotiations.
“I was probably trying to think how I could wrangle business class seats back out of them!” he said.
Pendles, Jay and Bruzzy Maynard also discussed Maynard’s best tackles of all time, his favourite one-on-one battles in footy, and the Pendles-led meeting that changed his career.
