The supermarket stopped selling its own brand of caged eggs in 2015, and now it pledges to remove caged eggs from other suppliers.
At Woolworth, the cheapest caged eggs cost around $4.50, while barn-laid eggs cost around $4.60, and Sunny Queen 12 extra large free-range eggs cost $7.20.
A Woolworths spokesperson said the Woolworths-branded egg cartons had been 100 per cent cage-free since 2015.
“We announced our plans to transition our entire egg range to cage-free back in 2013, and we’re working closely with our suppliers to gradually phase out caged eggs from all the brands we sell by 2025; we know many retailers and hospitality operators are moving in a similar direction,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said changes like this “take time”, and the supermarket needed to consult with suppliers to ensure sufficient time to modify their production methods.
“Across the market, in both retail and hospitality, egg supply has been reduced over the last 18 months due to a range of factors, including weather on-farm and input costs.”
