Will the Boxing Day Test be Australia’s biggest yet?

This month’s Boxing Day Test between Australia and India is slated to bring in the biggest MCG crowds in history.

Rivalling the crowds of the Tests between Australia and England, tickets for day one of the traditional Melbourne fixture have already sold out.

Tickets for days two and three are also selling fast, and it looks like the MCG crowd record for a Test could be broken.

Three times the amount of tickets have been sold to the Melbourne Test compared to the same time back in 2018-19 when the nations played.

Figures from Cricket Australia revealed that 10 per cent of Boxing Day Test tickets have been sold to overseas fans.

Currently, the biggest crowd for day one of the Boxing Test was 91,112 against England in 2013. Meanwhile, 300,270 spectators attended the MCG across a test in 1954.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Cricket Australia events and operations general manager Joel Morrison said the Test will be one of the biggest yet.

“We are seeing people come from India, the UK, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, Hong Kong and the UAE – so it is definitely a destination Test,” he said.

“And there is no doubt that the Boxing Day Test is one of the most iconic global sporting events.

“There is just something special about the MCG and the place it holds in Melbourne.”

In addition to sales, Morrison said it’s expected the test will be one of the most watched of all time. It indicates the Border-Gavaskar series is competing with the Ashes in popularity.
