Update: Aussies Injured In London-Singapore Flight Now Recovering

Eight Austrians are recovering in a Bangkok hospital after experiencing severe turbulence during a flight from London to Singapore.

The incident occurred on Tuesday when the Boeing 777-300ER, cruising at 11,300 metres, suddenly dropped to 9,400 metres within three minutes.

The incident, believed to have been caused by an air pocket, occurred as the cabin crew served breakfast.

The flight, carrying 18 crew members and 211 passengers, including 56 Australians, made an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 3:35pm.

According to AAP reports, the passengers included 47 from the UK, 41 from Singapore, and 23 from New Zealand.

Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok reported treating 71 passengers, with six in severe condition.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil provided an update on the injured Australians on Wednesday.

“We know that there were 56 Australians onboard, and we’ve just had information that at least eight of those Australians are actually in hospital in Bangkok, having injuries tended to,” Ms O’Neil said.

She said the Australian Government would offer consular assistance to those affected and encouraged families to contact consular support.

“To anyone in our country or if you’ve got family who have been affected by this, make sure you call consular assist, and you can find the number on Google.”
