“Truly the worst”: Donald Trump’s portrait removed from Colorado State Capitol

A portrait of US President Donald Trump has been removed from the Colorado State Capitol after the president described it as “truly the worst.”

The painting, created by artist Sarah Boardman, was unveiled in 2019 following a fundraising campaign led by Republican members of the Colorado Senate.

“Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves,” Trump expressed his dissatisfaction on Truth Social on Sunday.

Trump referred to the portrait as “purposefully distorted” and claimed that the artist had lost her talent as she got older.

“She must have lost her talent as she got older,” Trump said.

He also stated that he would “much prefer not having a picture than having this one” in the state building.

“The one on Colorado… was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before.”

Colorado State Senate Minority Leader Paul Lundeen publicly requested that the artwork be replaced with one that better represented Trump.

“Republican leadership asked for it to be taken down,” a spokesperson for Colorado House Democrats told USA Today.

The portrait has been officially removed, although no immediate plans have been announced to commission a new one.

In response to the portrait’s removal, Governor Jared Polis expressed surprise at Trump’s interest in Colorado’s Capitol artwork.

He added that he appreciated “everyone’s interest in our Capitol building” and reiterated the significance of the space as a symbol of the state’s democracy.

“We are always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience,” Polis said in a statement.
