A primary-school-aged boy lost his life after being struck by a large branch that fell from a tree on Thursday morning, according to local authorities.
Police were called to a property in Gowangardie, located approximately 30 kilometres south-east of Shepparton, after receiving reports of the incident just before 8 am.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the young boy, who sustained fatal injuries from the fallen branch.
“At this stage, it appears the boy was fatally injured when a large branch fell from a tree,” stated the police in an official statement released following the incident.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, but despite their best efforts, the child succumbed to his injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.
The identity of the child has not been disclosed at this time.
Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a comprehensive report will be prepared for the coroner.
Counselling services may be made available to those affected, including friends, family, and witnesses.
Authorities are urging the public to be cautious around trees, particularly during adverse weather, and to report any concerns about tree safety to relevant local authorities.
