Tradie Teen Dies After Falling From Brisbane Worksite

Work has been halted by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland at a Brisbane worksite after a teenage apprentice died following a work accident.

Tyler Whitton, 17, fell from the work site at West End before being transported to hospital in critical condition.

Whitton is believed to have fallen around 2 ½ metres while working at the CS Development Group building site on Victoria Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The teen was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for treatment but later passed away from his injuries.

According to a WHSQ spokesperson, a notice of non-disturbance has been issued which will prevent work from taking place as investigations continue.

The Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy union told The Brisbane Times that Whitton’s death followed a number of concerns about the site were voiced in a video posted to the CFMEU social media.

“Workers have raised these concerns to the builder and told the CFMEU they were not given the time to clean the site or follow simple safety procedures,” the CFMEW posted.

Workplace Health and Safety have been criticised by the union after allowing work to resume following the accident on Tuesday.

It is understood a concrete pouring operation took place despite an “identified risk of falls”.

Whitton is believed to have only just have celebrated his 17th birthday and was new to the industry.
