“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Mr Biden said in a statement.

“We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt — we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

A US official, speaking on anonymity, said the attacked occurred at an installation in Jordan known as Tower 22, however a Jordan spokesperson said it did not happen on its soil.

In addition to the deaths, US officials say 34 military personnel were being evaluated for possible traumatic brain injury and some of the injured soldiers were evaluated from the for further treatment.

The identities of the troops involved have not been revealed as officials continue to contact their families.

It is the first time US militants have been killed in the Middle East in hostile attacks since the Israel-Gaza war commenced on October 7.

In the same statement, Mr Biden shared his condolences to the victims’ families.

“Jill and I join the families and friends of our fallen – and Americans across the country – in grieving the loss of these warriors in this despicable and wholly unjust attack,” he said.
