Thousands Of South East Queensland Homes Head Into Fourth Day Without Power

More than 60,000 homes across Queensland head into a fourth day without power amid heatwave conditions.

Power was cut off during the Christmas Day storms and has been restored to 63,000 homes across Southeast Queensland, according to an Energex spokesperson.

Energex says there are more than 400 staff working across the state to fix damaged power lines and grids connecting to the remaining homes without power.

Isolated rain will bring some relief to the area before more heavy rainfall is forecast.

“Saturday is the most likely of the next three to four days to see thunderstorms and warnings issued,” meteorologist Jess Miskelly said.

“That will be over the area of Southeast Queensland and Northeast New South Wales.”

Warnings came too late

On Wednesday, Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate slammed the Bureau of Meteorology for the timing of their warning notifications.

Mr Tate said in a press conference he had received a notification from the Bureau’s app at 9pm for the storms that were due to hit at 8:45pm.

“I think it’s unforgivable,” he said.

“We will be talking to BOM about what’s going on regarding the warning because we can’t warn people … it’s not good enough.

“We’ve got to sort it, so it doesn’t happen again.”
