South Australia’s new mobile phone detection cameras have caught over 28,000 drivers using their phones behind the wheel in the last three months.
This follows a trial period earlier this year where 68,000 warnings were issued.
Superintendent Shane Johnson of SA Police said there was a significant decline in offences.
“This decline in detections is encouraging and indicates most drivers are getting the message,” he said.
Despite the overall drop, some drivers continue to flout the law.
One motorist racked up 41 breaches, accruing over $27,000 in fines and having their licence suspended.
Another driver received 23 fines, while 165 motorists were caught using their phones at least four times.
Each offence incurs a $556 fine, a $102 victims of crime levy, and three demerit points.
The North-South Motorway at Regency Park recorded the highest number of offences, with 7,657 detections.
Distraction continues to be a major concern on SA roads, contributing to over 30 deaths and 75 serious injuries this year.
“If you’re distracted for even two seconds at 60 km/h, you’re travelling 33 metres blind,” Superintendent Johnson warned.
SA Police also aim to install two more cameras in 2025 and expand enforcement to include distractions from smart watches.
“If it’s distracting you, it shouldn’t be part of your driving.”
