Vatican provides update on pope’s ‘critical’ medical condition

Pope Francis has spent a tenth day in hospital as prayers for his recovery continue worldwide, following a “critical” health update from the Vatican.

The 88-year-old pope, who is being treated for double pneumonia, experienced a severe asthma attack on Saturday and required blood transfusions for low platelet levels.

Vatican officials reported that the pope had a peaceful night, with no further health emergencies. However, he remains on oxygen at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Despite his condition, the pope expressed confidence in his treatment, thanking hospital staff in a message published Sunday, urging continued prayers for his recovery.

Admitted on February 14 for bronchitis, the pope’s health has continued to worsen, with reports indicating he suffered from a prolonged respiratory crisis and thrombocytopenia; a condition that leads to dangerously low platelet counts.

His condition remains critical, and the Vatican confirmed he is not out of danger.

Catholic devotees around the globe have shown their support, with masses held in cities such as Tegucigalpa, Buenos Aires, and Mosul.

Although Pope Francis has faced various health challenges in recent years, including surgery for a colon issue and hernia, he has not indicated plans to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013 due to health issues.

Well-wishers have gathered outside the hospital, leaving candles and expressing hopes for the pope’s recovery.
