Run clubs have taken off in 2023 and 2024, becoming the latest trend for fitness enthusiasts.

Whether it’s likened to the new dating app, a millennial quarter-life crisis, or a cost-effective gym membership alternative, running has found a new stride in contemporary culture.

With so many people lacing up and signing up for the next fun run or marathon, it’s important to know how to start running safely and effectively.

In this episode of The Briefing podcast, former Australian Athlete of the Year and World Champion sprinter Katie Williams joins Briefing producer Helen Smith to offer expert advice on achieving running goals without injury.

Global studies indicate that running surged during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The trend continues in 2024, with run clubs going viral on social media.

Gen Z, in particular, is 29 per cent more likely than Millennials to work out with a partner.

“I think now so many people are posting about running because there’s such a big community movement and there’s so much support like anyone that’s learning to run or joining a run club is celebrated,” Ms Williams said.

Apps like Runna can provide structured programs for beginners and seasoned runners.

She suggested that individuals explore various apps and find one that fits their goals and needs.

“Running is fantastic for both physical and mental health, but it’s crucial to approach it correctly to reap the benefits and stay injury-free,” Ms Williams said.

As more people join the running bandwagon, the key to sustaining this healthy habit is starting safely and smartly. 

“If you’re out there and you’re learning to run and you’re wanting to run, start following people that are on the same journey as you.”
