Teenager Arrested In Hobart CBD With Loaded Homemade Gun

Police arrested a teenager in Hobart’s CBD over alleged thefts after discovering he was carrying a loaded homemade gun.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers conducting foot patrols in the city centre apprehended a 19-year-old man at the scene after he was accused of stealing several items from a local business.

The young man, based in Tasmania’s north-west, was taken into custody.

Police allege they found a homemade gun, complete with ammunition, in addition to the stolen items and cannabis in the teenager’s possession.

The 19-year-old now faces a litany of serious charges, including stealing, unlawful possession, possessing a firearm without a firearm licence, possessing a loaded firearm in public without a licence, possessing ammunition, and selling and possessing a controlled plant (cannabis).

He is scheduled to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Inspector John Toohey said the police were committed to safeguarding the community and local businesses. 

“Our community deserves to feel safe at home, out in public, and in their workplaces,” he said.

Authorities urge anyone with information regarding illegal firearms or other criminal activities to come forward.
