Sydney is facing a surge in violence, with six shootings and attacks in just one month.
One of the most notable incidents happened in late June, when cocaine kingpin Alen Moradian was executed by unknown gunmen in the basement car park in Bondi Junction.
Moradian was linked to numerous crime groups, including the Comancheros and The Commission, a “consortium” of criminals who seek to control the price and distribution of cocaine in Sydney.
On today’s This Arvo in Sydney, we talked to The Daily Telegraph’s Crime Editor, Mark Morri, to shed light on the escalating attacks.
Mr Morri spoke to a number of senior police about the recent spate of violence and said they were worried about the public getting caught up in it.
In the 80s, it was heroin and there were gang wars, seven or eight killed in one year, but nowhere near as brazen,”
Mr Morri said.
I’ve spoken to quite a few senior police and they lose sleep over innocent people being killed. One young man was shot because he looked like a Hamzy, coming out of a boxing match”,
he added.
However, Mr Morri said some sort of “national action” to slow down the drugs coming to the country’s border is necessary.
That’s the problem, and until that stops, the shootings won’t stop.”
Last week, Taskforce Magnus was launched in response to the violence.
Investigators, expertise, and resources will be pooled from across the entire NSWPF organisation, including from all of State Crime Command’s specialist squads.
