A high-ranking NSW detective has been charged with drink driving last week after a crash investigation.
The 46-year-old driver, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is part of the NSW police executive.
The NSW Police did not issue an immediate media release but has denied any cover-up.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, who became aware of the incident in May, stated that the officer was not protected, and the matter has been referred to the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
“We had to wait for the legal process to take its course, and I can’t make that go any quicker,” she said during an interview on 2GB on Tuesday.
“So any suggestion that there’s a cover-up or interference, I reject.”
Deputy Commissioner David Hudson defended the police’s response but acknowledged that a media release should have been issued.
“There is no cover-up. And that is part of what the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission will examine,” he said on Wednesday.
“But I can say that, in my opinion, a media release should have been put out.”
The accused detective is set to face court on December 21, and his status within the force is under review.
