Samantha Mostyn Appointed As Australia’s 28th Governor-General

Samantha Mostyn has been appointed as Australia’s 28th Governor-General, replacing David Hurley, who has been Governor-General since 2019.

Mostyn, renowned for her distinguished career in law, business, and public service, is poised to take office on July 1.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed Mostyn’s selection, describing her as a “modern and optimistic leader for our modern and optimistic nation”.

Albanese said Mostyn’s leadership reflected “Australian values of equality, fairness and a responsibility to build a better future for the next generation”. 

“She has lived her life in the service of a powerful Australian principle when more people have the opportunity to fulfil their potential, our nation is a better place,” Albanese said. 

Throughout her career, Mostyn has chaired numerous not-for-profit boards, including prominent organisations like Beyond Blue, the Foundations of Young Australians, and the Australian National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety. 

She has also held esteemed positions such as President of the Australian Council for International Development and President of Chief Executive Women, alongside serving as a National Mental Health Commissioner.

Mostyn’s legal background and her tenure as an associate in the Court of Appeals of the NSW Supreme Court laid the foundation for her multifaceted career. 

Albanese also announced that Mostyn would serve as the first woman appointed as Commissioner for the AFL and was “strong advocate” for establishing the women’s AFL competition.
