Rents are skyrocketing across the country and you probably know someone with a renting horror story to share. With vacancy rates in Sydney and Melbourne, sitting at 2% and below 1% elsewhere in Australia, finding an affordable place to live is becoming increasingly difficult.
In today’s Briefing, we share the story of a 32-year-old woman who stood up to her greedy landlord by taking them to the NSW tribunal.
Chantelle Schmidt was renting a flat in Sydney’s inner-west with two other housemates when their property manager informed them their rent would be increasing from $950 to $1300 – a whopping $350 increase per week.
After attempts to negotiate the amount, Schmidt realised the only option she had left was to go to the tribunal.
