Record Number Of Australians Working Multiple Jobs As Cost Of Living Surges

A record number of Australians have taken on a second job this year amid the cost-of-living crisis.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 947,300 people (6.6 per cent of employed people) held multiple jobs in March 2023.

This was up 2.1 per cent to the 927,900 Australians who held multiple jobs in December 2022.

The data revealed that more women are taking on a second job compared to men, with 7.7 per cent of employed women working two jobs compared to 5.7 per cent of men.

When it comes to age, younger people are more likely to be working two jobs. 7.9 per cent of employed people aged 15-19 worked multiple jobs and 8.9 per cent aged 20-24.

In contrast, 5.5 per cent of employed people aged 60-64 and 5.2 per cent aged 65 or over were multiple jobholders.

People who worked multiple jobs were working, on average, 4.5 hours more a week to those with a single job.

Multiple jobholders usually worked 30.9 hours, on average, in their main job, and 9.6 hours in their secondary job(s), while single job holders worked 35.5 hours per week, on average.
