The program will now be examined in the senate inquiry which is looking into the blocked flights by Qatar Airlines which would have brought down prices.

Research by the Daily Telegraph revealed customers are using as much as five times the amount of points and additional cash to purchase flights that they could have before as part of the scheme.

Qantas last updated the scheme in 2019 where it increased the number of points required for flights by 15 per cent.

The latest revelations come after a dire few weeks for Qantas, following months of bad press for allegations of selling tickets on ghost flights and steeping flight and cancellation costs.

Opposition transport spokeswoman Bridget McKenzie told masthead the Qantas’ rewards point program needed to be examined.

“Qantas frequent flyer points have been debased progressively,’’ she said.

“They also have a significant role in people’s decisions to access airfares and the affordability of airfares.

“As chair of the committee looking at the affordability of our aviation sector I would welcome submissions on this issue for the committee to consider over coming weeks.”
