Anthony Albanese will reportedly announce the date of the Voice to Parliament referendum in South Australia at the end of next week.
The Prime Minister plans to kick off the formal Yes campaign in six weeks as The Age reports that the referendum date is expected to be October 14.
South Australia was selected for the Yes campaign launch due to its potential to be the deciding factor in securing the majority of four out of the six states voting in favour of the referendum.
“They’re quietly confident about Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales, and the national vote is tighter than the (public) polls show, and the national vote is much tighter too,” the government member told The Age.
“The vote in Queensland and WA is underwater – so they have to win SA too.”
As the referendum approaches, political figures are engaging in a concerted effort to rally support.
Mr Albanese was optimistic about the outcome of the referendum on Tuesday. He told ABC radio that he would remain the same approach to the Voice if he had his time again.
“This is a matter of conviction, it’s not a matter of convenience,” he said.
“It’s pretty simple, really, when you remove all the noise, it’s simply recognition and having an advisory body so we can listen to Indigenous Australians and get better results.”
The latest study by the Resolve Political Monitor earlier this month shows that support for the Voice has slipped from 48 to 46 per cent on the Yes or No question that will decide the referendum.
