Residents of New South Wales are being encouraged to steer clear of unnecessary dangers, as the Bureau of Meteorology has issued multiple flood alerts covering extensive areas of the state.
Over the past 24 hours, Sydney has experienced more than 100mm of rainfall, with warnings issued for possible life-threatening flooding and damaging winds spanning from the Hunter region to the South Coast.
The organisation has forecasted torrential rain throughout the weekend, prompting flood warnings across NSW.
The adverse weather conditions have already impacted transportation networks, with damage to equipment reported at Redfern and travellers at Sydney Airport concerned about potential delays and cancellations.
Emergency services have been inundated with calls for assistance, responding to 550 incidents and carrying out seven flood rescues in the past day alone.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “This is a significant weather event.”
“It’s very important that everyone in NSW listens to the latest broadcasts for updated warnings, particularly in your local region. It’s most important that you don’t take unnecessary risks at the moment, particularly travelling through floodwaters.”
A severe weather warning has been issued for Metropolitan Sydney, Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, and portions of Hunter, Central Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, and the ACT forecast districts.
Residents are strongly advised against driving, riding, or walking through floodwaters, and are encouraged to relocate vehicles to safer areas away from trees.
If your life is at risk, call Triple-0 (000) immediately
