New Report Shows Record Number Of Card Frauds In Australia

A record 1.8 million Australians had their credit card details stolen last financial year, with more than $2.2 billion stolen.

A report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) found the medium amount to be withdrawn from thieves was $200.

ABS Head of Crime and Justice Statistics William Milne said there has been a “sizeable increase” in the number of card frauds.

“It tends to be older people, 35-64 year olds, those in a married relationship, and those in a higher income bracket.”

They’re the ones who have more access to credit cards, debit cards, those sorts of financial instruments.”

William Milne said.

Milne said that limiting the number of cards you hold can reduce your chance of experiencing card fraud.

NSW Police recommend to check bank statements, insist transactions are done in front of you and only use recommended online electronic payment platforms.
