Queenslanders will witness a boost to the state’s policing efforts, with an additional 900 personnel set to join the Queensland Police Service (QPS).
This increase includes 500 extra sworn officers and 400 unsworn personnel, joining as part of the Miles Government’s Community Safety Plan.
Premier Steven Miles and Police Minister Mark Ryan announced the plan this morning, claiming the decision to be the largest investment in policing in over 30 years.
Despite global labour market challenges, Queensland has seen remarkable success in police recruitment.
Currently, nearly 700 recruits are undergoing training, with over 2,000 applicants in the recruitment pipeline.
Premier Miles said the government would give police 900 more positions.
“I’ve listened to Police who tell me they want more boots on the ground and the staff at the station who ensure operations run smoothly,” he said.
“We’ll throw everything at preventing and disrupting crime – that starts with having more police than ever before patrolling the streets of Queensland.”
The Queensland Police Service reports that the current number of police officers, combined with recruits in training, is at an all-time high in the state’s history.
“Police have done a remarkable job to lead the nation when it comes to police recruitment,” Mr Ryan said.
“This new investment in police will further enhance the Queensland Police Service’s capacity to support community safety.”
