Meet Kyah Simon, Proud First Nations Matilda And World Cup Goal Scorer

The Matildas won over the heart of all Australians last month with their record-breaking performance at the FIFA World Cup.

New and old fans alike marvelled at the individual histories and efforts of players coming together to make the Matildas.

One of those players is proud Anaiwan and Biripi woman, Kyah Simon.

Listen to our chat with Kyah Simon here:

The first Indigenous Australian player to score a goal in any FIFA Women’s World Cup, she also converted a winning goal in 2010 to help claim the Asian Cup for Australia.

Not to mention starring in the 2015 World Cup, 2018 and 2022 Asian Cups, 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, and was part of our team during the latest World Cup here in Australia.

On this week’s episode of Blak Matters, she joins Teela Reid to take us through the massive highs and lows of the recent World Cup effort, and what it means to be a First Nations player on the Australian squad.

“We’re making and breaking records and making our own history,” Kyah said.

“[The World Cup was] definitely a memorable moment for me throughout my career, and to see the country unite and come together, I think for a female sporting event like I’ve never seen before was pretty incredible.

We had the opportunity to show what women’s football is all about, to show what female athletes can do and to show how powerful women’s sport is in terms of capturing the hearts of the nation, bringing everyone together.”

ICYMI, listen to our recent episode about the surprising link between Indigenous Australia and soccer you might not know about here.

Blak Matters provides an inclusive, authentic exploration of First Nations issues from a First Nations perspective. Delivered as an honest but positive conversation between friends, MC & Teela Reid, in under 20 minutes. Listen now on the Listnr app.
