The incident began around 10pm on April 7, 2024, when an officer from Campsie Police Area Command attempted to stop a Toyota Hilux utility on Albert Street, Belmore.

The vehicle, however, failed to pull over, prompting the initiation of a pursuit due to its dangerous driving behaviour.

The pursuit continued onto Lakemba Street, where the Toyota proceeded through a red traffic light at the intersection of Burwood Road.

The Toyota later collided with several vehicles and a pole on Stacey Street, Bankstown.

Police spotted the vehicle again on Fairford Road and initiated a second pursuit with the assistance of officers from Bankstown Police Area Command.

The pursuit led onto the M5, where officers managed to stop the Toyota at the Belmore Road off-ramp in Riverwood.

During the attempted stop, the Toyota collided with a police-caged vehicle, triggering the deployment of airbags.

The vehicle then rolled back and struck the front of another marked police vehicle.

The driver sustained minor facial injuries from the crash and was subsequently taken to St George Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police established a crime scene, which was forensically examined.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pursuit is currently underway.

Authorities urge anyone with dashcam footage or information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
