Man charged after $700,000 disappears from Broken Hill ATMs

A 32-year-old man has been arrested after more than $700,000 in cash allegedly vanished from ATMs across Broken Hill in outback New South Wales.

NSW Police allege the man accessed the machines through his job before depositing over $375,000 into personal and business accounts.

Officers from the Barrier Police District executed a search warrant at the man’s home on Tuesday afternoon. 

Police say the man drove away after spotting officers but was later stopped, with a search of his car allegedly uncovering $6,235 in cash, ATM security tags and keys.

Further items, including digital devices and additional ATM keys, were also allegedly seized from his residence.

The man has been charged with nine counts of larceny over $15,000 and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Police are still investigating the whereabouts of the remaining $326,000.

The accused was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Broken Hill Local Court on September 9.
