Latest Newspoll Reveals Who Will Vote In Favour For A Voice To Parliament

Support for a Voice to Parliament continues to slip, with a latest Newspoll revealing only 46 per cent of Australians will vote “Yes” to altering the Constitution.

The poll conducted for The Australian also indicated 43 per cent would vote “No” while 11 per cent were unsure.

The results are troubling to the Federal Government, which will send Australians to the polling booths later in the year in hopes to secure constitutional recognition for First Nations people.

While voters have been asked before to share whether that would be voting yes or no, the latest poll asked the 1,549 voters the exact question which would be put to them at the referendum.

Question: Later this year, Australians will decide at a referendum whether to alter the Australian Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration? If ‘uncommitted’, voting at this referendum will be compulsory. While you may change your mind, if you had to choose now, do you approve of this proposed alteration of the Australian Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?

According to the poll, women, young voters, and city-based university educated people are more likely to support the Voice.

Men, those without a tertiary agree and people aged over 50 make up the cohort of those against the Voice. It also revealed 63 per cent of Coalition supporters are against the proposal.

The fall in support comes after a survey posted by The Australian in April which averaged the results from three Newspolls conducted between February and April.

That survey revealed 54 per cent of Australians were in favour of the Voice, 38 per cent opposed, and eight per cent unsure.
