Inside Melbourne’s High-Security Data Bunker

In an age where our most private and sensitive information is digitised, have you ever wondered where it’s all kept safe?

On today’s The Briefing, we take you inside one of Melbourne’s high-security data bunkers where this vital data is stored and protected from potential cyberattacks.

From medical records and phone data to banking information and national security secrets, these digital treasures are housed in different locations across Australia.

The Briefing team was given exclusive access to one such bunker operated by AUCould in Melbourne.

The data bunker is equipped with ballistic-proof glass and other high-tech security features to deter and withstand potential threats.

CEO of AUCloud, Peter Maloney, said there are multiple levels of security when accessing a data centre.

“You don’t normally see a lot of people running businesses, and you certainly don’t see consumers ever really walking inside a data centre,” Mr Maloney said.

“They’re in a very, very controlled environment and they’re operated by the data centre owner,” he added.

Australia ranks as one of the most connected and frequently targeted countries globally, making robust data security measures more crucial than ever, especially with the rise of sophisticated hacking, scamming, and espionage activities.

“The Australian Government is investing in small to medium enterprises and raising their cyber awareness so that they lift their cyber security posture to prevent crimes.”
