Australians would have access to unlimited mental health sessions under a bold plan announced by the Greens.
The plan is expected to cost $5.9 billion over the next 10 years, and the cap of 10 subsidised mental health sessions as part of a person’s mental health plan will be removed.
In late 2022, the subsidy was halved from 20.
The Greens’ proposal would also offer free psychologist sessions at proposed local healthcare clinics.
The minimum Medicare rebate for clinical or registered psychologists would also be extended to $150.
The flagship election promise will be launched on Thursday in Melbourne’s seat of Macnamara as the party narrows in on inner-city Labor seats ahead of the next federal election.
Greens’ leader Adam Bandt said, “If you’re putting off mental healthcare because you can’t afford it, you’re not alone”.
“One in three big corporations pay no tax. The Greens will make big corporations pay their fair share of tax so you can see a psychologist for free and get unlimited mental health appointments through Medicare.”
