Israel is stalling on a Gaza ceasefire deal with Hamas, saying the group has backed away from key parts of the agreement.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was due to vote on the deal, but that’s been delayed, sparking fears that the fighting won’t stop on Sunday as initially agreed.

A spokesperson for Hamas has disputed the claims, saying they have not reneged on the deal.
Bassem Naim, the head of Hamas’ political and international relations, was also asked about the group’s future in Gaza. Naim said they are ready to hold an election and let the people decide on the leadership.
Despite the pause in progress, US officials remain confident the Gaza ceasefire and hostage swap can start this weekend.
White House national security communications adviser John Kirby confirmed they are working through some last-minute issues. Kirby said they hope to have them resolved in time.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers told the ABC last night that now is the time for peace.
“Too much blood has been shared already in too many innocent lives, have already been lost. Now we need to see all parties on all sides stick to the terms of the agreement because we wanna make sure that this peace is lasting rather than fleeting,” Chalmer said.
