US President Donald Trump has restated his intentions of taking over Gaza despite major opposition, including from his own supporters.
Trump said Israel would “turn over” the territory to the US after it concludes its military offensive against Hamas.
In a post on his Truth Social network on Thursday, Trump reinforced his proposal.
“The Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting,” he said,.
“The Palestinians … would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region.
“They would actually have a chance to be happy, safe, and free. No soldiers by the U.S. would be needed!”
Trump’s latest statement comes after the White House seemingly retreated from the under following criticism.
It’s understood Trump liased with some aids before making the announcement public but no feasibiliy studies has been conducted.
Among those who have opposed Trump’s proposal include Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Egypt warned the expulsion of Palestinians would destablise the region and undermine its peace treaty with Israel, while Saudi Arabia said it would not normalise relations with Israel.
Back in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has so far delined to comment on Trump’s intentions, however the Palestinian Authority’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Varsen Aghabekian, has urged Australia to reject the proposal.
“We want to have Australia and all other countries who are for international law and who want a world order … to stand tall and say that this is not acceptable. You cannot defy international law,” she told 7.30.
“We want all countries of the world, including Australia, to very clearly state … that they object to statements of displacement and the negation of Palestinian rights.
“We’ve been refugees for over seven decades we will not repeat that.”
