US President-elect Donald Trump has been recognised as Time magazine’s Person of the Year for a second time.
Ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Friday 1:30am AEDT, Trump said the recognition was “a tremendous honour”.
You can hear more about Trump’s recognition as well as what else is making the news in the headlines of The Briefing:
“Time magazine, getting this honour for the second time, I think I like it better this time, actually,” he said.
Trump was joined by his wife, Melania, daughters, Ivanka and Tiffany, and Vice President-elect JD Vance, where they watched over the crowd chanting “USA” before he raised his fist.
Time’s editors choose the recognition each year. Editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs said Trump was someone who, “for better or for worse, had the most influence on the news in 2024”.
“This is someone who made a historic comeback, who reshaped the American presidency and who’s reordering American politics,” Jacobs said on NBC’s Today show.
“It’s hard to argue with the fact that the person who’s moving into the Oval Office is the most influential person in news.”
“Since he began running for President in 2015, perhaps no single individual has played a larger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” Times wrote.
“Trump has remade American politics.”
Trump was Time’s Person of the Year back in 2016 when he was first elected president.
X owner Elon Musk, Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Kate, the Princess of Wales, were finalists for the award.
