Did Ivan Milat Act Alone? Ballistics Evidence Suggests Not

“It was pretty clear to me there were two people, each with their own gun, firing their own box of ammunition,” said ballistics expert Gerard Dutton.

Dutton investigated one of Australia’s most notorious crime cases, The Backpacker Murders. His expertise on guns helped secure the conviction of serial killer Ivan Milat.

There has been endless speculation that Ivan Milat did not act alone, and Dutton’s evidence supports this theory.

Dutton discusses his findings on the latest episode of Crime Insiders: Forensics.

Investigators found gun cartridge cases near where the bodies were discovered, including 47 Winchester cases and 46 Eley cases.

Dutton examined these cases under a microscope and found that every Winchester case was fired from the same gun, and the Eley cases from another.

“It was pretty clear to me we had two people, each with their own gun, firing their own box of ammunition,” he said.

Despite this evidence, the commander of the investigation at the time steadfastly believed Ivan Milat was the sole murderer.

Dutton said although the commander would be privy to more information, the ballistics evidence alone suggests there were two shooters.
