Dating Apps Required To Create Industry Code Of Practices To Protect Users

The federal government has ordered dating apps to create safer platforms to protect users from sexual harassment and violence.

Given the deadline of mid-2024, dating apps must develop and implement an industry code of practice.

Popular online dating apps like, Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, were written to the federal government detailing the request and warned legislative options would be pursued for failing to comply.

The industry code of practice aimed to protect more than three million Australians that use the apps – with three in four people from the five years to 2021 having experienced sexual violence.

The “voluntary” code would need to include ways of improving engagement with law enforcement, supporting at-risk users, improving safety policies and practices, and greater transparency about harms.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said online dating apps and sites needed to do their part to end violence against women.

“Dating apps are now the most common way to meet a partner in Australia, yet the level of violence experienced by users of these platforms is deeply concerning,” Ms Rowland said.

“That is why I have decided to provide members of the online dating industry with an opportunity to work together to address the government’s concerns.

“However, I have made it crystal clear that if the industry fails to improve safety outcomes for Australians, we will not hesitate to develop legislative options.”
